Deposition of melanin and iron in ocular structures in haemochromatosis
نویسنده
چکیده
Cutaneous pigmentation is a well-recognized feature of idiopathic haemochromatosis and, in various series, has been recorded in up to 8o per cent. of patients (Finch and Finch, I955). In the world literature there are occasional reports of pigmentation in the gums (Saundby, I890), buccal mucous membranes (Richardiere, I895), lips (Parker, I903), and tongue (Hess and Zurhelle, I905), and Maddox (I933) recorded the presence of discolouration around the disc margin of the retina in four patients with haemochromatosis. The past finding was also observed by Hudson (1953) in one of the five patients he examined. Apart from these reports, however, abnormal pigmentation in the eye has received little attention. In this paper we describe findings related to the occurrence and distribution of melanin and iron in the extraocular structures and within the eye, in haemochromatosis, based on a study of 44 patients.

In this paper, we have studied the electrical properties of the randomly distributed metallic (Co and Fe) nano/ micro wires on Silicon substrate. Deposition was carried out potentiostatically into the pores of the track-etch polycarbonate membrane spin coated onto the Si substrate. Spin coated films were irradiated with 150MeV Ni (+11) ions at a fluence of 8E7 ions/cm2, followed by UV irradiati...
متن کاملA PCR-SSP method for detecting the Cys282Tyr mutation in the HFE gene associated with hereditary haemochromatosis.
Hereditary haemochromatosis is a common genetic disorder that causes hyperabsorption of dietary iron, leading to increased deposition and various organic diseases. Early diagnosis is important if effective treatment is to be applied and the iron overload corrected before the onset of clinical symptoms. Recently, a candidate gene has been identified in which a single point mutation shows a very ...
متن کاملHereditary haemochromatosis.
Haemochromatosis should currently refer to hereditary iron overload disorders presenting with a definite and common phenotype characterised by normal erythropoiesis, increased transferrin saturation and ferritin and primarily parenchymal iron deposition related to innate low (but normally regulated) production of the hepatic peptide hormone hepcidin. Since the discovery of the haemochromatosis ...
متن کاملPorphyria cutanea tarda and haemochromatosis: a family study.
A female patient aged 73 presented with a history of general malaise and hyperpigmentation. Iron studies in the patient and immediate family members indicated that the proband was homozygous for haemochromatosis, but subsequent investigations revealed that porphyria cutanea tarda was responsible for her signs and symptoms. Venesection of four units of blood brought her symptoms under control. T...
